Clash of Clans maker Supercell becomes Europe’s first ‘decacorn’!
Finland’s Supercell has achieved a significant milestone by becoming Europe’s first “decacorn,” a technology company valued at $10 billion. This achievement comes after a buyout from the Chinese internet giant Tencent.
Tencent and its partners have acquired an 84.3% stake in Supercell, the developer behind the popular Clash of Clans mobile game, for $8.6 billion. This transaction values Supercell at $10.2 billion, making it the first European tech startup to reach this valuation threshold.
Although Supercell’s games consistently rank high in download charts, Tencent, its new owner, is relatively less known in Western markets. Tencent is a massive company with a valuation of $207 billion and is best recognized for its WeChat messaging app. WeChat is a comprehensive communication platform in China, serving functions similar to WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, PayPal, and the App Store, all integrated into one service.
About Clash Of Clans
Clash of Clans is a popular free-to-play mobile strategy video game created and published by the Finnish game developer Supercell in 2012. Initially launched for iOS platforms on August 2, 2012, it later became available on Google Play for Android on October 7, 2013.
The game is set in a fantasy-themed persistent world, where players assume the role of a village chief. Players can also form clans, consisting of up to fifty members, to engage in Clan Wars, donate and receive troops, and communicate with one another.
Upon its release, Clash of Clans received generally positive reviews from critics. Supercell subsequently developed four spin-off games set in the Clash of Clans universe. The first spin-off, Clash Royale, was launched in 2016. The other three spin-offs, namely Clash Quest, Clash Mini, and Clash Heroes, were announced in April 2021. However, Clash Quest development was discontinued on August 17, 2022.
